Eligibility Requirements in Florida for a Certified Nursing Assistant
In the state of Florida, you need to be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma (or its equivalent) in order to be a CNA. You must also have completed a Level II background screening in order to begin a CNA program in Florida. This background check includes fingerprinting. Fees for this service vary depending on the service provider. The Department of Health accepts electronic
fingerprinting service offered by Livescan service providers that are approved by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and listed at their site. The Florida Board of Nursing must approve the results of the background screening before you can be tested to get your Florida CNA certification and be placed on the Nursing Registry. The Board may request more information about any criminal offenses listed on the background screening results. Each applicant is handled on a case by case basis.
CNA Training in Florida and Testing
Unlike many other states, Florida does not require you to complete a state-approved CNA training program prior to taking the competency examination. However, it is highly recommended that you do take this training in order for you to obtain the essential knowledge and skills necessary for you to both pass the exam and be a successful CNA. The CNA training program consists
of both classroom curriculum as well as hands-on clinical hours. Both are essential for learning the key components of being a CNA. For a full list of Florida Nursing Education programs, click HERE.
Once you have completed your CNA training and/or independent study, you are ready to take the competency examination. The state of Florida uses Prometric to administer their CNA exams. The cost of the exam is $140. Please note, if you choose to enroll in a training program there will be additional costs for the program. Training program costs vary depending on where you take the
classes and what the program entails.
The Florida CNA exam consists of a written portion and a skills performance section. The Written Exam is a 90 minute computer-based test with 60 multiple choice questions written in English. An Oral or Spanish Test may be requested for the Written Exam if you have difficulty reading English. However, you must ask for the Spanish/Oral Test when you submit your application. You can take a sample test which will allow you to become familiar with the test format and question type. There is a $10 charge per sample exam.
The Clinical Skills Evaluation requires you to perform five randomly selected nursing assistant skills. Examples of these skills would be changing bed linens while a bed is occupied with a patient, assisting a patient to get dressed, feeding a patient, measuring and recording a patient’s pulse, providing catheter care, providing mouth care to a patient with or without dentures, and
giving a patient a bath. This portion of the test ranges from 31 minutes to 40 minutes based on the skills that you are asked to perform. To pass a skill, you are not required to perform the skill perfectly, but you are required to demonstrate competency of the skill. You must pass both parts of the examination in order to be placed on the Florida Nursing Assistant
Registry. In addition, you have to pass both exams within 3 attempts in a 2 year time period. If you do not, then you will need to complete a minimum of 120 hours in a state-approved training program. If you do not pass both exams within 2 years of passing the first exam part, your results will become invalid and you will need to retake both parts of the exam. Placement on the Florida
Nursing Assistant Registry generally generally takes place within 14 days of passing the entire exam. It may take longer for you to receive your actual certificate from the Board in the mail.

Renewals
CNA licenses must be renewed every two years ending on a May 31. The cost to renew your Florida CNA license is $55 if you renew before your license expires. Fees increase if you renew past the expiration date. In order to be eligible to renew, you must have performed paid nursing related services within the prior 24 consecutive months.
